ChatGPT vs Gemini in 2026: Which AI Plan Is Better Value?
ScoviAI Team6 min read

The short answer
ChatGPT Go ($8) and Google AI Plus ($7.99) cost the same, as do ChatGPT Plus ($20) and Google AI Pro ($19.99). Google's plans add storage and family sharing, and AI Pro is free for a year for US college students.ChatGPT vs Gemini is closer on price than most people think. Both have a free plan, a cheap plan at about $8 a month (ChatGPT Go $8, Google AI Plus $7.99) and a top plan at about $20 (ChatGPT Plus $20, Google AI Pro $19.99). The big differences are elsewhere: Google's plans include cloud storage and can be shared with five other people, and Google AI Pro is free for 12 months for US college students, while ChatGPT gives students four free months of Plus if they claim it by October 31, 2026.
Quick answer: for one person who lives in ChatGPT, ChatGPT Go or Plus. For a family, or anyone who already pays Google for storage, Google AI Plus or Pro gives more for the same money. US college students should start with the free year of Google AI Pro.

The $8 tier: ChatGPT Go vs Google AI Plus
ChatGPT Go ($8 a month) gives about 10 times the free plan's messages, file uploads and image creation, unlimited everyday text chats on OpenAI's fast model, longer memory and context, plus projects, tasks and custom GPTs. It may show ads, and deep research, the advanced reasoning models and Codex have lower limits than on Plus.
Google AI Plus ($7.99 a month) gives about twice the free plan's Gemini limits, more access to Gemini's Pro model, Nano Banana Pro for images, AI filmmaking tools in Flow, NotebookLM with up to 100 sources per notebook, a 128,000-token context window and 200 GB of storage. You can share it with up to five other people, and new subscribers get 50% off the first two months.
Verdict: for a single person, pick the assistant you already prefer; the price is the same. For a household, Google AI Plus is clearly better value, because one subscription covers up to six people and includes storage. More detail in our ChatGPT Go vs Plus and Google AI Plus vs Pro guides.

The $20 tier: ChatGPT Plus vs Google AI Pro
ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month) adds expanded access to OpenAI's most advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, expanded Codex usage for coding, higher limits, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, early access to new features and no ads. It's billed monthly only.
Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) gives about four times the standard Gemini limits, a 1-million-token context window (so Gemini can read whole books, long reports or large codebases at once), up to 300 sources per notebook in NotebookLM, expanded access to Google's most capable models and 5 TB of storage, shareable with five other people.
Verdict: if you work with very long documents or need storage, Google AI Pro gives more for the money. If you rely on deep research reports, Codex or custom GPTs, ChatGPT Plus is the more complete tool. Neither has a public coupon code.
What a year costs
| Choice | 12 months |
|---|---|
| Google AI Plus (with 2 months at half price) | about $87.90 |
| ChatGPT Go | $96 |
| Google AI Pro | $239.88 |
| ChatGPT Plus | $240 |
| Google AI Pro for US college students | $0 for the first year |
The first-year AI Plus figure assumes you're a new subscriber and get the 50% intro price for two months; after that it's $7.99 a month.
Which is better for everyday questions and writing?
Both are strong everyday assistants. ChatGPT Go removes the free plan's interruptions at $8 and is simple to use. Gemini fits naturally if you already live in Gmail, Docs and Drive, and the storage that comes with Google's plans can replace a separate bill.
Which is better for research and long documents?
- Google AI Pro wins on context: 1 million tokens vs much smaller windows on the cheaper plans, and NotebookLM handles up to 300 sources per notebook.
- ChatGPT Plus wins on deep research, which browses many sources and writes a structured report for you.

Which is better for images and video?
ChatGPT Go and Plus include image creation, with higher limits on Plus. Google AI Plus and Pro include Nano Banana Pro for images in the Gemini app and Flow for AI filmmaking. If video is what you need, look at our free AI video generator guide before paying for either.
Students: Gemini wins clearly
- Google AI Pro is free for 12 months for US college students aged 18+. Student status is verified and re-checked every year, a payment method is required, and you must sign up by December 31, 2026. After the free year it renews at $19.99 a month unless you cancel.
- ChatGPT Plus is free for 4 months for students at eligible US schools who claim it by October 31, 2026.
The best move is to claim both, set reminders before each renews, and keep the one you actually use. Our Google AI Pro for students guide walks through the sign-up.
Families: Gemini wins too
Both Google AI Plus and AI Pro can be shared with up to five other people. A family of four paying for separate ChatGPT Go plans would spend $384 a year; one Google AI Plus plan costs $95.88 at the regular price. If your household uses AI, this is the biggest saving on the page.
ChatGPT vs Gemini: which should you choose?
- Single user, already uses ChatGPT every day: ChatGPT Go ($8) or Plus ($20).
- Family or shared household: Google AI Plus ($7.99), shared with up to five people.
- Long documents, big research notebooks, lots of files: Google AI Pro ($19.99).
- Deep research reports and coding with Codex: ChatGPT Plus ($20).
- US college student: Google AI Pro free for a year, plus ChatGPT Plus free for 4 months.
Common mistakes
- Paying for storage twice. If you already pay Google for storage, an AI plan may replace that bill.
- Not sharing a Google plan. Both Google AI plans can be shared; separate subscriptions waste money.
- Students paying full price. Claim the free offers before paying anything.
- Forgetting the intro price ends. AI Plus's 50% discount lasts two months.
Bottom line
At the same price points, Google gives more extras (storage, family sharing and a free student year), while ChatGPT gives the more complete single app (deep research, Codex, custom GPTs). Try both free plans, then pick based on who will use it and what you need most.
