The short answer
The cheapest AI subscription is Poe at $49.99 a year, then Google AI Plus ($7.99 a month) and ChatGPT Go ($8). For full-power plans, Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro cost $200 a year. US college students can get Google AI Pro free for 12 months. The cheapest AI subscription from a major company in 2026 is Poe at $49.99 a year (about $4.17 a month), followed by Google AI Plus at $7.99 a month (half price for the first two months) and ChatGPT Go at $8 a month. If you want a top-tier assistant, the lowest full-year price is Claude Pro at $200 a year or Perplexity Pro at $200 a year, both about $17 a month. And if you're a student, the cheapest AI subscription is often $0: Google AI Pro is free for a year for US college students.
Quick answer: for everyday chatting, pick ChatGPT Go ($8) or Google AI Plus ($7.99). For serious daily work, a yearly plan (Claude Pro or Perplexity Pro, $200 a year) beats any $20 monthly plan. Students should claim the free offers first and pay for nothing until they run out.

Cheapest AI subscriptions in 2026, compared
All prices are for one person in the US, as of October 2026. "Per month" for yearly plans is the yearly price divided by 12.
| Plan | Price | Per month | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poe (entry plan) | $49.99 a year | about $4.17 | Trying many models in one app |
| Google AI Plus | $7.99 a month (50% off the first 2 months) | $7.99 | Gemini plus storage for a family |
| ChatGPT Go | $8 a month | $8 | More ChatGPT than the free plan |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $99.99 a year | about $8.33 | Word, Excel and Copilot together |
| Perplexity Education Pro | $10 a month | $10 | Students and teachers who research |
| Claude Pro (yearly) | $200 a year | about $17 | Writing, research and coding |
| Perplexity Pro (yearly) | $200 a year | about $17 | Search with sources |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 a month | $19.99 | Heavy Gemini use, 5 TB storage |
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 a month | $20 | Full ChatGPT, monthly only |
The cheapest AI subscription: Poe
Poe by Quora puts models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others in one app. Its entry subscription costs $49.99 a year and gives you 10,000 points a day to spend on any bot. That's the lowest price we found for paid access to several leading models.
The catch is the points. Premium models use far more points per message than smaller ones, so the entry plan runs out quickly if you only use the most powerful models. Treat it as a cheap way to try many assistants, not as a replacement for a dedicated Plus or Pro plan. Bigger Poe plans start at $199.99 a year.

Google AI Plus vs ChatGPT Go: the $8 tier
Two big companies now sell a cheaper plan below their $20 tier.
Google AI Plus costs $7.99 a month in the US, and for a limited time new subscribers get 50% off the first two months. It gives you more access to Gemini's Pro model and Nano Banana Pro for images, AI video tools in Flow, NotebookLM features and 200 GB of storage, and you can share it with up to five family members. Usage limits are about twice the free plan's; the full Google AI Pro plan has twice that again. We compare both in our Google AI Plus vs Pro guide.
ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month and gives you about 10 times more messages, file uploads and image creation than the free ChatGPT plan, plus longer memory, projects, tasks and custom GPTs. Ads may appear on Go, which is one of the reasons Plus still exists. Read our ChatGPT Go vs Plus comparison before you pick.
Which one is cheaper in practice? For a single person they're nearly identical. For a household, Google AI Plus wins because one subscription covers up to six people.
Microsoft 365 Personal: AI that comes with Office
If you'd pay for Word and Excel anyway, Microsoft 365 Personal is the cheapest way to get Copilot inside the apps: $99.99 a year (about $8.33 a month) or $9.99 monthly. You get Office, 1 TB of storage and Copilot features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Heavy Copilot users can step up to Microsoft 365 Premium at $199.99 a year; see our Copilot Pro price guide.
The cheapest full-power plans: pay yearly
The $20 tier (ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, Perplexity Pro) is where the strongest models and the highest limits live. Here the trick is simple: choose a company that offers yearly billing.
- Claude Pro costs $200 a year instead of $240. We break it down in our Claude Pro price guide.
- Perplexity Pro also costs $200 a year instead of $240.
- ChatGPT Plus is monthly only ($240 a year), so there's no yearly saving. Our ChatGPT Plus discount guide lists the legitimate ways to pay less.
- Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month.
Paying $200 up front only saves money if you'll keep using the assistant for the whole year. Use the monthly plan for a month first.
Free AI subscriptions for students
Students should never pay full price. As of October 2026:
- Google AI Pro is free for 12 months for US college students aged 18 and over (it renews at $19.99 a month afterwards).
- ChatGPT Plus is free for 4 months for students at eligible US schools, if you claim it by October 31, 2026.
- Perplexity Education Pro costs $10 a month instead of $20.
- Office 365 Education (web Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Copilot Chat) is free with a school email.
Our AI student discounts guide lists every verified offer.
Do you need a subscription at all?
Often not. The free plans of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity are good enough for a few questions a day. Upgrade when the limits start costing you time, not before. Three signs it's time to pay:
- You hit the message limit several times a week.
- You need a feature that's paid-only, like longer documents, more file uploads or a coding agent.
- You use AI for work that earns money, where an hour saved is worth more than $8 to $20.
How to pay the least for AI in 2026
- Pick one assistant. Paying for two $20 plans costs $480 a year. Most people use one far more than the other.
- Use yearly billing where it exists. Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro save $40 a year.
- Share when you can. Google AI Plus and AI Pro can be shared with family members.
- Stack free tools. Free plans plus free offers (like Perplexity's Comet browser) cover a lot.
- Watch the calendar. We track sales on our Black Friday AI deals page and the newest deals every day.
So what is the cheapest AI subscription?
For pure price, Poe's $49.99 yearly plan. For the best value per dollar for most people, ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus at about $8 a month. For power users, a $200 yearly plan from Claude or Perplexity. And for students, free: start with Google AI Pro and ChatGPT Plus offers before spending anything.
