ChatGPT Plus Free for Students: How to Claim 4 Months Before October 31 (and Not Lose Them)
ScoviAI TeamUpdated 8 min read

The short answer
US college students can get four months of ChatGPT Plus for $0 if they claim by October 31, 2026. Here is how it works, the one mistake that costs people their free months, and what to do when month four ends.Yes, ChatGPT Plus is free for students right now, but only if you're a US college student and only if you claim it by October 31, 2026. OpenAI's Back to School offer gives you four monthly billing periods of Plus at no cost. That's $80 you don't pay. After that it turns into a normal $20-a-month subscription unless you cancel.
That's the short version. The longer version is worth three minutes, because there's one detail in the terms that quietly costs people their free months, and most "how to get ChatGPT Plus free" posts skip it.
We put this deal on ScoviAI as ChatGPT Plus free for 4 months for US college students, and it's been one of the hottest things on the site since. Here's everything we learned reading OpenAI's own help pages line by line.
Who can get ChatGPT Plus free as a student?
According to OpenAI's help center, the offer is for current full-time and part-time college and graduate students at eligible US degree-granting schools. Grad students count. Part-time students count, which surprises a lot of people. Community colleges that grant degrees can qualify too, though SheerID makes the final call on each school.
What doesn't count:
- Students outside the US. There's no international version of this one. (Canadian students: see the Codex section below, that one does include you.)
- High school students. It's a college offer.
- Subscriptions billed through the App Store or Google Play. If you pay for Plus inside the iPhone or Android app, the offer can't be applied while you're billed that way.
OpenAI doesn't check your status itself. A company called SheerID does the verification, and SheerID decides whether your school and enrollment qualify. OpenAI's student newsletter also frames the offer as being for students whose campus doesn't already give them ChatGPT Edu, so if your school already provides it, you may not need this at all.
If you already pay for Plus monthly directly through ChatGPT (not through an app store), good news: existing subscribers can claim it too.
How to claim it, step by step
The whole thing takes about five minutes if SheerID recognizes your school.
- Log into the ChatGPT account you actually want Plus on. This matters more than it sounds. The offer lands on whichever account is signed in when you claim it, and you can only redeem it once.
- Go to chatgpt.com/students/2026 and click the button to claim the offer.
- Verify with SheerID. Depending on your school, it'll either confirm you instantly from enrollment records, send you to your school's login page (the same one you use for your student portal), or ask you to upload a document like a class schedule or tuition receipt dated for the current term.
- Add a payment method. Yes, even though it's free. You won't be charged during the four months, but the card is what the subscription renews on afterward.
- Set a calendar reminder for about a week before the fourth month ends. We'll explain why in a second.
A small thing that trips people up: the email you give SheerID doesn't have to match your ChatGPT email. You can verify with your .edu address and still keep Plus on your personal Gmail-based account.

The mistake that costs people their free months
Here's the part nobody reads. The usual instinct with any "free trial that needs a card" is to claim it and cancel immediately so you never get charged. Don't do that here.
OpenAI's terms say that if you cancel, you keep Plus until the end of the current monthly billing period, and any remaining promotional months are forfeited. So if you claim on October 20 and cancel on October 21, you get one free month, not four. The other three just disappear.
The right move is the boring one: claim it, use it, and cancel in the last week of month four if you don't want to pay $20 after that. A phone reminder is the whole trick.
Your timeline, with real dates
Because it's four monthly billing periods, the free time starts the day you claim. A rough guide:
| You claim on | Plus is free until about | First $20 charge (if you don't cancel) |
|---|---|---|
| October 10, 2026 | February 10, 2027 | around February 10, 2027 |
| October 20, 2026 | February 20, 2027 | around February 20, 2027 |
| October 31, 2026 (last day) | February 28, 2027 | around end of February 2027 |
As of October 2026. Exact dates follow your billing day, which you can see in ChatGPT under Settings, then Account.
Practically, that covers the rest of fall semester, finals, winter break and the first weeks of spring. Not bad for $0.
If SheerID won't verify you
Most people sail through. When it doesn't work, it's usually one of these:
- "Verification Limit Exceeded." Students in OpenAI's community forum have reported this one. SheerID ties verification to your name, school and date of birth, not your email, so trying again with a different email won't help. Make sure your details match your school records exactly (legal name, not a nickname), and if it still fails, contact SheerID or OpenAI support rather than retrying over and over.
- Stuck in a loop between SheerID and ChatGPT. OpenAI's advice is to check that you're signed into the same ChatGPT account that started the offer. Different account in another tab, or logged out midway, and the flow gets confused. A private browser window with one login usually fixes it.
- Your document gets rejected. Use something official that shows your full name, your school's name and a date in the current term. A screenshot of your class schedule from the student portal usually works better than a photo of an old ID card.
- You're billed through Apple or Google. The offer can't be applied while Apple or Google bills you. The simplest route is usually to cancel the app-store subscription, let it run out, then claim on chatgpt.com in a browser. Leave enough time before October 31.
What you actually get with Plus
Plus is ChatGPT's $20-a-month plan. Compared to the free plan, OpenAI lists higher message limits, priority access when servers are busy and access to more models, plus features like projects, custom GPTs, file uploads, image generation and voice. Exact limits change often and depend on the model, so we'd rather send you to OpenAI's pricing page than print numbers that'll be stale in a month.
What matters for a student: if you've ever hit "you've reached your limit" at 1 a.m. the night before a paper is due, Plus is the fix. If you only ask ChatGPT a couple of questions a week, you won't feel much difference, and that's useful to know before month five.
One thing Plus doesn't have: a yearly plan. OpenAI's help center says annual billing isn't currently supported, so there's no "pay for a year and save" trick later. After the free months it's $20 every month or nothing.
The bonus most students miss: $100 in Codex credits
Separate from the Plus offer, OpenAI has Codex for university students: 2,500 Codex credits (OpenAI says that's worth $100) for verified students at degree-granting universities in the US or Canada. Codex is OpenAI's coding agent, so this matters if you're in CS, data science, or you just build things.
The useful details from its terms:
- It works on any plan, including the free one, so you don't need Plus to claim it.
- It's one claim per student, verified through SheerID again.
- Credits expire 12 months after you get them.
- OpenAI says it can't move your eligibility to a different account later, so claim it on the account you'll keep.
If you code, claim both. They don't cancel each other out.
When month four ends: what to do next
You have three sensible options, and none of them is "keep paying $20 without thinking about it."
1. Keep Plus if you used it daily and hit limits on the free plan. That's the honest test.
2. Drop to a cheaper plan. ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month and gives you higher limits than the free plan without the full Plus price. Our ChatGPT deals page has the details.
3. Switch to the next free student offer. This is where it gets fun. Google is giving US college students Google AI Pro free for 12 months (normally $19.99 a month), with a sign-up deadline of December 31, 2026. Because Google's free year starts when you sign up, a smart order is: claim ChatGPT Plus now, then sign up for Google AI Pro closer to the end of December. You get ChatGPT Plus through the winter and Gemini's paid plan through most of 2027, and you can compare them side by side for a couple of months. Our guide to Google AI Pro for students walks through that one.
If research is your thing, Perplexity's Education Pro is $10 a month for students and teachers, half the normal Pro price.
Has OpenAI done this before? Will it come back?
Yes. In spring 2025, OpenAI made Plus free through May for college students in the US and Canada, timed for finals. This fall's version is the second big student push, and this time it's US-only.
Will there be another one after October 31? Nobody outside OpenAI knows. Two offers in two school years suggests students are a group they care about, but we wouldn't skip this one hoping for a better one later. If something new shows up, it'll be on our ChatGPT deals page, and we keep a running list of every AI student discount we've verified.
And if you're not a student, our post on legit ways to get ChatGPT Plus cheaper covers the options that do exist for everyone else.
Bottom line
If you're a US college student, there's no real downside here. Claim it before October 31, don't cancel early (you'll lose the remaining months), set one reminder for month four, and decide then whether Plus earned its $20. Four months is long enough to find out.
